Adderley’s Bride

by Danita Minnis

Excerpt

By dinner time, the fire going in her room cast shadows on the opposite wallpaper’s whimsical foliage design. She brought up a tray with leftover stew and sat in the window seat, eating by the light of a single Tiffany lamp on the side table.

Outside her corner bedroom window, it was full dark at six p.m. Lamp posts trailed down the hill along the edge of the lawn. There was a black band of darkness beyond that and she remembered there was a stand of trees in that area before another rolling hill led to the next property.

It was so quiet here. Different from the city further south that never slept. It was never silent or this dark there with all its sights and sounds. She felt like someone had turned the volume down so that she could think, and plan.

From outside, she heard a horse neigh. She looked up at the window to see a dark horse and rider bound across the lawn.

Blinking away tears for a better look, she watched as the large black horse jumped gracefully and so high.

She squinted, trying to get a better look. The horse’s hooves didn’t appear to touch the ground. The rider sat expertly through the cavorting as if letting the horse have its head.

She couldn’t see the horse and rider clearly because they were too far away. With the darkness, they appeared in silhouette. Horse and rider arched once more and then as quickly as they had appeared, disappeared into the stand of trees beyond.

The Danvers must have a horse, but why ride across her lawn? She’d check in the morning to see if the horse’s hooves had damaged the landscaping. Maybe she would pay the Danvers a visit.

In the reflection of the glass, she caught a movement behind her. A tall man stared at her from the soft forest glow in the room. Against the backdrop of the green leaves in the wallpaper, there was an impression of short, dark hair and sharp angular features before his light eyes bore into hers. They glowed with such intensity that she could not look away. It was an effort to fight the pull, but she managed to jerk her eyes away from the window.

She jumped up and the tray and bowl of stew clanged to the floor. “How did you get in here?”

The spot on the throw rug in front of the bed where she’d just seen the man was empty.

Author Interview

1. Woohoo! You are a published author. Describe a strong character trait you possess, good or bad, and how it helped you become a published author.

Well, as a child I studied dance with a very strict teacher, so I learned how to focus and practice. I also had my first experience with being in “flow” or in “the zone” while dancing. So, many years ago, when I started writing nonfiction articles and books for my living, I was lucky to understand that the only way I could make it work would mean bringing to my writing that same focus I’d experienced as a child studying dance. I think that benefit every time I see a child committed to a sport or playing instrument or involved wholeheartedly in any pursuit. That dedication will pay off with everything they do later.

Of course, the fact that I adore writing and the writing process can’t hurt to keep me in the chair.

2. Sometimes an author begins writing a story before they are aware of its genre. Did you choose your genre, or did it choose you?

I love this question because what I write has been described as romance, women’s romantic fiction, and love stories…I often call my work family drama/love stories. Nowadays, these romantic journeys, which often involve family issues, are right in the mainstream. My current book, The Jacks of her Heart, is a lighter side romance, but it still fits into the themes in all my fiction: hope, healing, and plenty of second chances. Lorna and Jack fall in love and marry on impulse, but now they have to decide if they can make their relationship work.

Once I get started on a book, the genre gives way, and all I really care about are the characters and seeing how they figure out their dilemmas and allow love to prevail.

This book is now Book 1 of The Capehart Bay series. Going from one book to a three-book series seems to choose me. I start out with the one idea, but it isn’t long before other characters step up and demand their say. So, The Icing on Her Cake will follow along soon. Adderley’s Bride

by

Danita Minnis

Sofie is a singer, baker and a serious planner. When she finds her rocker boyfriend up against the wall in a vocal booth with a back-up singer, her five-year plan for a home and family is dubbed over like a bad music track.

Gray, a lusty ghost who acts like she is his long-dead fiancée invades her dreams and works her body over, night and after night. It isn’t long before Sofie’s plans include her beguiling lover, a ghost man with a plan of his own; be with me. Nice plan if you call that living…

Excerpt

He came up behind her at the island as she was kneading dough for the beignets.

The spacious kitchen should have been cold in the middle of the night but the hard body against her back enveloped her in warmth. She curled into him. At five-foot-four, her head only reached his chest. His pecs were a firm pillow.

In the seductive veil of the dream, her peripheral vision blurred so that she felt more than she saw. The only light on in the kitchen was the overhead light which pulsed above them. A thought teased her consciousness that maybe it was not the overhead light at all, but something more.

“Ah, Sweet Sofie.” He shifted until he was nestled between her legs. “I am drawn to you like a moth to a flame.” His arms came over her and as he helped her knead the dough, his shaft slid in and out between her legs.

She sighed her pleasure and leaned her head against his chest. Watching his big hands over hers with flecks of the flour and sugar mixture coating the hair on his knuckles was an erotic vision of teamwork. She wondered how those hands would feel as they kneaded her flesh.

Their hands worked in time to the rhythm of his slide, in and out. Their fingers clenched onto the mound of dough as he pushed forward, and released as he slid out from between her thighs. Their heavy breathing was the only sound as they clenched and released, clenched and released…

A lazy heat flared between her legs, warming her to the core and making her hips rock back and forth. Her legs were giving way and she spread them wider to stay upright. She stopped kneading the dough to lean over and hold onto the island.

He grabbed her hair, wrapping it around his hand so that she had to lean her head back against him. “Don’t stop,” his gentle scolding tickled her ear. “I have not had a decent beignet since I arrived in these United States.” He released her hair and pressed closer. She was now trapped between the island and his lean hips. “I’ll hold you up.” His low chuckle was a hot vibration between her thighs.

falconsangel

 The Cardiff Family

Family can be both a blessing and a curse. You don’t want to quibble over who gets the Stradivarius, or who gets Angel. Angel is no angel, and some demons just cannot be ignored.

Oh, and then there’s Falcon. Assassin, spy, lover, demon-fighter. Angel’s accent is clipped with fury at his betrayal, red-rouged lips turn up in a moue as he wraps his arms around her. He’ll keep her busy this night.

Orange talons reach to the sky, turning day into fiery night. Through the flames, they hold their breath yet the smell of brimstone still reaches them – and the cries of the dying.

On the other side the witch waits. Angel’s mum, Amelie. loveentwined very small

The flames die down as Amelie approaches. The sky lightens to purple pink. It won’t always be this way, but for now Amelie’s peaceful interlude helps them to see beyond the storm that is il Dragone, before the blood of the Cardiff’s was spilled. To the beginning and Angel’s father Roman and the other sentinels who wait to bring down il Dragone.

Family birthright can be a blessing and a curse.

“Amelie Laurent, may I introduce you to Roman Cardiff.” Harold gestured toward the Burberry divan in the corner.

She closed her mouth and turned, hand extended. The apology died on her lips.

He was a Greek god in a dark tailored suit. Very tall. Different in reality. Cooler than she expected. There was arrogance in his square jaw. His aquiline nose and thick, black brows made him look like a predator.

His expression would have seemed harsh except for the warmth of the sky blue gaze traveling slowly up her body. The eyes gave his features a seraphim quality. They leisurely toured the peachy-pink lacquered toenails peeking through the front of her navy pumps, and then moved up the curve of her hips. She felt those eyes like a puff of warm breath when they grazed the swell of her breasts above the white silk blouse.

She was an innocent doe being circled by a panther that was higher up on the food chain and more resourceful.

Clearly, he wanted to take a bite out of her. His imperial stance said it was his due.

His nostrils flared as he inhaled her scent.

Amelie looked down at the large hand holding hers. Warm, like a glove.

Finally, his gaze met hers.

She did not move, but something sinful shivered inside her. It was the part of her who knew this man. But these feelings weren’t hers—they belonged to that other woman. The one who waited for him at night in her bedroom.

He is real. But he could not be her dream lover.

With an unholy smile, Mr. Cardiff lifted her hand. Full lips moved over her skin in a warm caress, and she was filled with craving.

She jolted out of her reverie, tried to pull away, but he held her there. Her hand relaxed in his.

Stop this, you don’t know him!

 TRR Q&A

In Love Entwined, where does Amelie first see Roman Cardiff?

  1. In Yorkshire, England
  2. In Rouen, France
  3. On the subway
  4. In her dreams
