At moments like these, the reproach clear in his voice, she wondered if a kid from a trailer park ever fit into this world. Did she even want to? For the sake of the animals, she needed to pretend she fit in. She straightened, gazing around the table.

No one paid any attention. What was he worried about? “Do you know anyone here?”

“My boss is sitting two seats away on your left.”

Now his attitude made sense. While she chewed the last bit of lettuce drenched in some odd, sweet salad dressing, Daria put down her fork. She wrinkled her nose, but she rubbed the skin back to normal.

“If you need to blow your nose, go to the ladies’ room.”

“Why are you so harsh tonight?” she asked.

He put a hand on her arm. “I’m sorry. I’m just a little nervous. I have my performance review tomorrow.”

She straightened again while clearing her throat. The pressure was on. “Oh. I’ll be on my best behavior, then.” Not wanting to lie, she resisted the urge to promise not to wear her food. That promise wasn’t something she could keep. She smiled at the occupants of the table. All the women wore dresses which cost more than her net worth, but she refused to be ashamed. Everything she owned she’d earned herself.

“Thanks,” Samuel said.

A server took away the plates. Another replaced them with the main course.

While he ate the filet mignon, Samuel had ordered her some chicken. He’d forgotten again. She stopped a server. “Could I please have the vegetarian plate?”

The woman next to her put a hand on her arm. “You don’t eat meat?”
