Author Interview

1. How did you choose your genre? What made you write this book?

I love paranormal romance and how much it sparks my imagination, but I had never written an angel romance before, so when the inspiration struck I had to give this one a go. My hero Zack came into my mind fully formed – I just needed a good story to put him in, along with a strong heroine who would be a good match for him.

2. Writers write what they know, and must observe the world. Are you a firstborn, middle, or last child and how does this shape your view of the world?

I’m an only child, and I can remember as a kid wishing I had a brother or sister just so I could know what it was like. As I got older I witnessed a lot of dysfunctional families and changed my mind about that, since brothers and sisters seemed to be more people you could fall out with and yet not get away from. I’m happy to say, however, that my husband’s family is perfect in that regard – he has a brother and a sister and they all get on very well. I’ve been very lucky with my in-laws.

3. Where is your favorite place to write?

My actual writing is always done at my computer desk, but when it comes to planning, I like to curl up on my couch with a glass of wine and one of my cats beside me. Both of them on a good day.

4. How do you feel about killing your darlings, and what do you do with the remains?

I have quite a few past stories which came to nothing because they weren’t good enough, and I keep the basics – setting and characters – on the back burner in case I want to use them in a future story. There’s always the chance I might be able to use them elsewhere.

5. You are introduced to your favorite author. Who is it, and what is that one burning question you must ask them?

I’ve always wanted to meet Anne Bronte, whose novel “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” I adapted for Totally Bound’s Clandestine Classics line. I would love to know what other ideas for books she had – I know she had many in mind that she wasn’t able to complete before she died.

6. Inquiring minds want to know…tell readers something about you that no one knows.

Back in the early 1990s, my left arm briefly appeared on Going Live. I was at a Radio One roadshow that was being televised, and the cameraman started to film my section of the crowd while we were screaming for Dannii Minogue to come and talk to us. I tried to get into the shot, but when I saw it on TV, all I could see was my left arm in its hideous lilac shell suit.

7. You are stranded on a deserted island with only a backpack for company. What three items are in your survival pack?

A blow-up raft, a foldable pair of oars, and a bottomless bottle of water. I don’t do well out in the wild, so my plan would be to get to civilization as fast as possible.

8. If you could have one superpower in your existence, what would it be?

I’ve often thought about this – I like the idea of invisibility or being able to freeze time – but I think the one I would want the most is teleportation. Not only could I get anywhere I wanted to quickly, but it would mean I’d never have to get on a plane again. I’m a terrible flyer.

9. Favorite snack?

I have a habit of snacking on blue cheese and crackers. I know many people who hate blue cheese, which is fine – more for me! I don’t have much of a sweet tooth – I’ve always preferred savoury snacks.

10. Indy 500 – Do you know how to get where you’re going or do you drive the speed limit?

I have no sense of direction and am terrified of speeding, so I’d be utterly useless!

Excerpt:

“You’re not into this, are you?”

The voice, low and male, cut through Tatum’s thoughts. Automatically, she looked across the table at its owner, wondering at the same time how she had even heard him. He was on the other side of the table and conversation was going on all around them, yet she had heard him as clearly as if he had spoken directly into her ear.

She didn’t recognize him. His dark hair was slicked back, revealing high cheekbones and a chiseled jaw, a surprisingly modelesque face she was sure she would have remembered if she had seen him before. Ice blue eyes were focused on hers, a mysterious smile flickering on his lips.

“It’s not my thing, but I’ll go with it.”

“Mine neither.” His smile broadened just a little. “I’m Zack, by the way.”

“Tatum.”

His voice was still low, deep, and yet seemed to be cutting through the surrounding noise as though directly connected to her ear. Nobody else seemed to be paying attention.

“Ouija boards are an uncontrolled medium. Too many people, not enough care, not enough … respect.” Zack threw a glance at Nicole, who was swigging from a glass of punch. “Anything could go wrong.”

“So why are you doing it?” Tatum knew the question could have been directed equally at herself, but somehow she found herself wanting to know the answer.

Zack arched an eyebrow. “Somebody has to be in control.”

His eyes were still locked on hers, and Tatum felt a dark flush cover her face. To have somebody’s attention so tightly focused on her made something tingle low in her gut.
