Let me tell you a secret: I
pass myself off as a southern belle most of the time, since I’ve spent more
than half my life in the south, but I grew up not far from the location of the
fictional Amazon Compound which is home to my Ushers.

I grew up in a beautiful
place in the foothills of the Berkshire mountains, and that was where I decided
to set the private school campus which was overrun by wolves in the 1970s. I picture
Amazon Compound as a place outside of time–its long-lived inhabitants
take care of it and keep it safe from
harm. Inside its walls is a thriving city where misfits, rogues, and, until
recently, ghosts could live in peace. A haven.

When Fionn and Annie drive
south in search of the Kirk family in Appalachia, they come to visit my other home,
the home of my heart: Asheville, North Carolina. I went to college there and
fell in love with the city. I go back to visit every chance I get and I feel at
home every time I do. Asheville is also a haven, a city celebrating the
unusual, the offbeat, and the absurd as freely as they celebrate more
traditional measures of success.

I don’t call either Asheville
or New England home anymore, but I loved visiting them in my fiction, and I
hope you’ll enjoy them as well.

Vanessa North was born in New
England but moved to the South as a teenager, where she learned to appreciate
biscuits and gravy, bluegrass, and that most welcome of greetings: “Hey y’all!”
She has a degree in Mass Communication but has long since abandoned journalism
in favor of writing romance. Instead of telling the news, V would rather tell
stories.
