When Survival Becomes Friendship
Writers spend a great deal of time thinking about conflict. We learn how to create it, deepen it, and use it to drive a story. But the most interesting relationships aren’t formed because people like one another. They’re formed because circumstances force them to rely on each other.
Survival strips away pretense.
Characters under pressure reveal who they really are. The brave become braver. The selfish become more selfish. The dependable become indispensable. Shared hardship creates opportunities for trust because actions matter more than words.
One thing I enjoy most as a writer is when characters discover strengths in one another they never expected to admire. A rival’s competence. An enemy’s courage. A stranger’s loyalty.
Those moments feel authentic because they mirror real life. Some of our strongest friendships don’t begin with instant connection. They begin with shared work, shared challenges, or shared adversity. Sometimes, they begin because we spend so much time arguing that we respect how hard the other person refuses to give up.
In fiction, survival situations accelerate that process. Characters don’t have the luxury of remaining distant observers. They must act. They must choose. They must depend on one another.
And sometimes, in the process of staying alive, they discover they have become friends.
The relationship between Six and Pietas in my Bringer of Chaos series grew from exactly that question: What happens when two people who should never trust one another become dependent on each other for survival?
Through a novella and three novels, these characters change from enemies desperate for survival to friends who trust the other has his back. How that happens, and why, carries the entire story.
Start with the free novella Lights Out, and then pick up book one, Origin of Pietas, free through the end of September. Watch Your Six – out August 14, 2026.
Enemies by birth. Allies by necessity. Brothers by choice. — The Bringer of Chaos series.
