Beverly Ovalle’s Top Ten on Writing
1. Humor – I absolutely love a book that has me falling off of my chair laughing. Most everything is either humor, erotic or a cookbook on my kindle. Touched by the Sandman is erotic and I do like to write what I like to read, but it is not fall off your chair funny.
2. Male Character – I love the steely eyed Alpha male that does what he thinks is best, especially if it makes the woman in his life safe or in this case, keeps Aryne from being trapped in a world he is not sure he can live in.
3. Female Character – I love the feisty woman who stands up for her beliefs. Alainn however is lonely rather than feisty in the typical sense. She does find her backbone and that has more to do with her finally deciding to go after and believe in what she wants.
4. Continuity – I have to have a believable timeline. Jumping back and forth between times and multiple scenes drives me nuts, especially if it isn’t done well. THIS IS NOT A MOVIE. If you’re not describing it, living it, the reader won’t have a clue. Memories and dreams are hard to put in the story and have it run well. I had Alainn tying in memories of her daydreams as a child to tie her together with Aryne’s life. Hopefully it worked!
5. POV (Point of view) – I’m learning, and it’s hard. It is fun, and it can really bring the story along. I think it is fascinating being inside the characters heads. Sometimes it can really make me go crazy. But isn’t that the definition of a fiction writer? If I can’t tell who is talking I tend to drop it when I read. I’ve read a lot that I just wanted to bang my head against the wall. But let me tell you, it is a whole different ball game when you’re writing it! LOL. It’s hard. I download my drafts on my kindle and read them like anyone else’s books. Boy can you find the errors that way! That was one of my biggest challenges with Touched by the Sandman, staying in the correct POV.
6. Senses – I LOVE using senses in a book, ‘The skim of his hand, the heat of his skin traced the edges of her curves. Her body arched toward his touch.’ Or ‘The heat of the day, the soft caress of the breeze on her face’ and ‘The trace of his tongue demanding sweet entrance sent a wave of heat throughout her body. She yearned to deepen the kiss. She didn’t dare. Alainn felt the hint of his smile against her lips.’ I tried to convey the sense of touching a LOT. My book after all is Touched by the Sandman. (I tried to keep the examples PG!)
7. Scene – It has to be just perfect-for the characters. It is important to convey the scene to the reader. I try to make it realistic. I tend to incorporate the places I’ve travelled so I can convey it. I’ve travelled a lot. I was in the US Navy and went all over the world. I travelled around the US as my parents believed in seeing the US on vacation-in a station wagon-with three children and usually a pet. Photos tend to take me back, sometimes just a smell will bring where I’ve gone. If I’ve never been there, I research the countries I want to convey. Of course I write mainly PNR so I can make up my own world, but those experiences give me the ability to describe a location that will hopefully make the reader feel they are there.
8. Action – Oh my erotic tale is all about the action! I want to describe the action and interaction of the characters to each other. How one thing can and does lead to another.
9. The World – maybe another word for scene, but more than that. The book’s world has to stay the same throughout. Activities, home, country have to be consistent. It has to have an explanation. The scenes can change but the basic world has to remain the same. The same rules have to apply each time. Aryne travels to other worlds at night, or in any sliver of darkness to a world. I try to keep that consistent.
10. Words – I cannot say anything more important. No overuse, used in the proper context, spelled correctly, words bring my story to life. Thank goodness I have an editor that is awesome, or he really knows how to use word! LOL. Nope, he is awesome and keeps me in line. In an erotic novel you don’t want the same word describing a body part or action used over and over. It would be kind of like using the missionary position every time you made love. Would you want to read that? Variety is the spice of life!

EXCERPT
The darkness blurred and shimmered, bringing to life a man of moonlight and darkness: Aryne.
Before him Aryne could see her, lying in bed, tears of loneliness staining her pillow. She made his heart ache. He softly stepped to her side. His hand touched her face and gently pushed back her hair. He leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, turning her dreams from sadness to joy. Her body arched toward his touch as the skim of his hand, the heat of his skin traced the edges of her curves. He stepped back…and then within the shimmer of dreams disappeared.
Night after night her loneliness cried to him. Unable to resist, he came to her. Subtly he inserted himself into her dreams, into her arms. Aryne knew it was wrong. As a guide, his job was to bring sweet, peaceful dreams. But no one affected him like she had. He was unable to resist comforting her, drawing her into his arms, covering her body with his…but only in her dreams. There Aryne stole the passion from her lips, igniting an ache in his body that would not go away.
Touching her shattered him. He knew instinctively that her touch would be his downfall. Her touch could keep him here in this splinter of his world, isolated as all of the Outcasts were. Generations had gone by; those exiled had died long ago, their children mixing amongst the races of the universe.
He had tried to stay away, fearing this. He was adrift, swept away, drowning in her passion, breaths away from losing himself. Giving in, acknowledging the power she unknowingly had over him would condemn him, keep him here if she was unable to travel to his world. Very few could navigate between worlds. And this world would drain his power rather than enhance it. Even the short time he spent there took its toll on him, the drain only in abeyance when he was in her arms. Try as he might, he could not resist her siren call. Only by controlling her and the passion between them could he make sure that he would not become lost. Lost in her. Trapped forever in her world.
He had done his best, gentling her to his hand, to his control. She knew the unspoken rules, knew the consequences. He played them out in her dreams, a dark symphony of passion and restraint. Perhaps unforgivable for a guide, but he could not resist. And just her body was no longer enough. Eventually he would capture her heart and soul.
A man of shadows, it would be during the midnight hours of her slumber.
