You Read What?

Way back in the stone ages when I was in college, I
was sitting in an English literature class on the first day of the semester. The
professor was going around the room asking everyone was to say their name and
what they liked to read. This was a class full of English majors, people who study
literature with a capitol “L”, so naturally there were lots of impressive
titles and authors thrown around, though I suspect more than a few of the kids
in my class were looking at the syllabus and picking a name at random. As
student after student introduced themselves saying how much they really loved Chaucer, Milton or Shakespeare, I debated with myself
whether to admit to the genre of my recreational reading. Would they laugh,
look down their noses at me? Kick me out of the department? As it got closer
and closer to my turn to spill the beans, my palms began to sweat, but I
decided I was going to fess up.

Yes, I was an English major, an honors student in the
department. I was there on scholarship. And I read romance novels. A lot of
them. Just about every single day since I was 13.

Some students snickered (the guys). The polite ones tried
not to stare. The professor asked whether I meant the poets of the Romantic
Age, like Byron and Keats or whether I meant “those books” that could be found
in the checkout of the grocery store. I could tell he was trying valiantly to
hide his sneer, but I didn’t care. I liked what I liked. And I earned an A in
his class that semester, so I felt a little like I proved a woman could be
educated, intelligent and knowledgeable about literature with a capital “L” and
still like “those books”.

Since I’ve started writing, I’ve faced all that again.
Friends and family who know I write always want to know what I spend so much
time scribbling at. At first I was a little skittish about telling them. But
then I decided that millions of people read and love romance novels—just look
at the top sellers at any publishing house if you need proof. And I promise you,
writing a 400 page romance novel is just as difficult, if not more so, that
writing a 400 page novel in any other genre. So now I wear it proud. “I write
romance,” I say. “The naughty kind.” There is very rarely a request for further
clarification.

There seems to be a kind of shame in reading and
writing romance stories I’ve tried to understand over the years. Is it because
it’s a genre dominated by women? Is it because of the lurid covers and silly
titles come romance novels carry? Is it male insecurity that a real man could
never live up to the heroes we read and write about?  I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t care. People
who target this wonderful genre to berate and belittle are the ones missing
out, in my opinion. We’re lucky to have such a large group of people who share
our love of a good love story, whether it’s naughty or nice.

So how about you? Do you tell people what you read
when they ask? Do you carry the books around out in public or stick to the more
subtle e-book versions of your favorite naughty books?

Blurb:

London and Nick have been
friends since college but when Nick moves in with London during renovations to
his own apartment, things quickly start to become less than platonic. Just as
London is starting to see the upside to this new development, she meets the
perfect guy for her, Collin, an artist at the art gallery where she works.

Nick is her best friend, her
confidant, the one person on Earth she can just be herself with. But Collin
feeds her intellect, her artistic side, her soul.  Once she’s finally tasted each of them,
London knows she has to choose, but cannot decide which man she can live
without. Luckily Nick and Collin have it all figured out and are determined to
show London that two are always better than one.

  1. I am not afraid to say what I love reading. Any type of romance literature, especially the naughty kind lets women like me escape to a world where there isn’t diapers and messes to clean, or laundry to be done. I will never be ashamed of liking these types of books. I carry them both in paperback and on my e-reader.

  2. I tell people what I read when they ask, or if I see someone reading a book in the same or close to the same genres that I read I will tell them about another author they should look into or ask them about the author they are reading or others they would recommend. Sometimes if I just see someone reading I will ask them what they are reading and then we get into a conversation about different books and authors.
I carry both physical books and books on an e-reader or usually my phone. My phone is always with me so if I have to wait in line somewhere I can just pull up a book. Gotta love those free reading apps. 🙂

  3. I love my Kindle, but if someone asks what I’m reading, I tell them. Better still, I tell them WHO I’m reading!
