Author Interview

1. Woohoo! You are a published author. Describe a strong character trait you possess, good or bad, and how it helped you become a published author. Determination, I wrote and submitted to agents and was turned down. It wasn’t until I bought a kindle and discovered the self-published writer, Amanda Hocking and fell in love with her books did I realize that I could publish my books too!

2. Sometimes an author begins writing a story before they are aware of its genre. Did you choose your genre, or did it choose you? No I always know the genre. All of my stories have a bit of romance, even horror. Go figure.

  1. The plot thickens, or does it? Which one are you, a pantser or a plotter? I am a plotter with pantser tendencies. I know the end before the beginning, so I work backwards outlining, but as I write surprises pop up everywhere.

4. Fear 101: As writers it is our duty to make our characters face their fears. Have you ever included one of your own fears in a storyline? Yes, all the time. I think every character needs flaws and I pepper flaws and/or insecurities because it makes them human and me not needing a therapist. Ha.

5. Fear 102: Yes, deadlines are terrifying. Have you conquered the juggling act between writing and the rest of your life? What do you do when it feels like the balls are dropping all around you? No, I still haven’t figured it out and I add more to my life daily. I blow deadlines, miss birthday parties, and find an excuse to procrastinate, but without the ciaos I wouldn’t be me.

6. Switch positions with one of your main characters in a scene. What is the outcome, disaster or divine intervention? Ha. That’s a funny question. I can think of a scene when my character is riding a motorcycle and I think it would be a complete disaster. I can’t drive a motorcycle and I think I’ll crash all over the place.

7. Where is your favorite place to write? Add that one comfort food that you can’t do without. Surprisingly, at any coffee shop and I usually eat donuts and coffee while I write. I think the combo of sugar and caffeine makes me keep going.

8. Writing inspirations? Music. When I hear a song the words speak to me. I feel myself getting lost in the words and inspired.
9. You are introduced to your favorite author. Who is it, and what is that one burning question you must ask them? I’ve met her. I met H.P. Mallory at an RT convention and I went all fan girl on her be for asking her what’s been her favorite part, and she told me that it was a dream to see her books in Barnes and Noble. I can’t wait for that moment!

  1. I’ve gone mad – why don’t you come with me? Some people just don’t understand us writers. Name a quirky, writer-thing you do that friends wish you didn’t. I tell them to send me text messages with things that I say when my phone is dead. They always claim they partially wrote my books, but I just laugh.

GENRE: Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Blurb:

Who will she choose as her one true love and how many lives will be turned upside down in her quest to fulfill her eternal destiny? Excerpt:

Unbound, Book Two

Hades closed the space between us. “I will return soon, my sweet.” He took my hand, kissing my fingertips, before releasing it. Then the three gods and Dawn disappeared.

Ben and I stood alone in the hallway as I moved closer to him. The lust from our kiss still lingered thick between us.

“Ben . . . I—”

“Shhh.” His finger touched my lips, stopping my rambling. “We have only a short time, and I need to plead my case to you; so let me show, rather than tell you why it should be me you pick for eternity.”

Adderley’s Bride

by Danita Minnis

Excerpt

By dinner time, the fire going in her room cast shadows on the opposite wallpaper’s whimsical foliage design. She brought up a tray with leftover stew and sat in the window seat, eating by the light of a single Tiffany lamp on the side table.

Outside her corner bedroom window, it was full dark at six p.m. Lamp posts trailed down the hill along the edge of the lawn. There was a black band of darkness beyond that and she remembered there was a stand of trees in that area before another rolling hill led to the next property.

It was so quiet here. Different from the city further south that never slept. It was never silent or this dark there with all its sights and sounds. She felt like someone had turned the volume down so that she could think, and plan.

From outside, she heard a horse neigh. She looked up at the window to see a dark horse and rider bound across the lawn.

Blinking away tears for a better look, she watched as the large black horse jumped gracefully and so high.

She squinted, trying to get a better look. The horse’s hooves didn’t appear to touch the ground. The rider sat expertly through the cavorting as if letting the horse have its head.

She couldn’t see the horse and rider clearly because they were too far away. With the darkness, they appeared in silhouette. Horse and rider arched once more and then as quickly as they had appeared, disappeared into the stand of trees beyond.

The Danvers must have a horse, but why ride across her lawn? She’d check in the morning to see if the horse’s hooves had damaged the landscaping. Maybe she would pay the Danvers a visit.

In the reflection of the glass, she caught a movement behind her. A tall man stared at her from the soft forest glow in the room. Against the backdrop of the green leaves in the wallpaper, there was an impression of short, dark hair and sharp angular features before his light eyes bore into hers. They glowed with such intensity that she could not look away. It was an effort to fight the pull, but she managed to jerk her eyes away from the window.

She jumped up and the tray and bowl of stew clanged to the floor. “How did you get in here?”

The spot on the throw rug in front of the bed where she’d just seen the man was empty.

Wedding Matilda

by Heather Hiestand

Blurb:

Sugared violets, buttercream…but he craves her kiss most of all…

Orphaned as a boy, Ewan Hales is proud to make his living as secretary to the manager at Redcake’s Tea Shop. But the startling news that he’s heir to the Earl of Fitzwalter changes everything. While tendering his resignation to lovely Matilda Redcake, however, Ewan is struck by her spirit, the luscious bow of her lips—and a realization. Matilda might not marry a working man—but will she wed a future nobleman?

Ewan’s unruly hair and roguish kisses are tempting, but Matilda has far too many problems to consider romance. With sabotage at a cake factory threatening the family empire, she must focus her considerable willpower on keeping Redcake’s from ruin—until she learns that her young son has been kidnapped. Together, she and Ewan must uncover the truth before they can savor the sweet freedom of love…

Excerpt One:

“Ah, Mr. Hales,” said a portly gentleman in a dandruff-bedecked black suit as he entered the room from some inner chamber. He gave Ewan a searching glance.

“Yes, sir.” Ewan stood and shook hands with the solicitor. “I confess I do not know why I was summoned here. What was the purpose of your letter?”

“The matter was too delicate to put into writing.” The man glanced over him again.

Ewan knew his appearance to be impeccable, other than his untamable hair, so that couldn’t be the reason for the man’s curiosity. “I cannot take much time away from my duties, Mr. Norwich. Could you please be brief?”

The other man sat down, seeming to expand to fit his chair, with the air of one who planned a conversation of considerable length. “What do you know about your family?”

Ewan slicked back his hair as he considered this, his tension heightening from the intent of such a question. Was a legacy due to him? Every orphan, even one of twenty-seven years of age, imagined lost relatives out in the world hoping to find him.

Perrin Pring will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Author Interview

1. Woohoo! You are a published author. Describe a strong character trait you possess, good or bad, and how it helped you become a published author. Thank you. Getting published was quite exciting for me. I’d say that the trait that probably helped me the most in getting published is my tenacity. I didn’t give up, even when I wanted to bury myself in my mountain of rejection letters. I just kept writing, even when the naysayers were the loudest.

2. Sometimes an author begins writing a story before they are aware of its genre. Did you choose your genre, or did it choose you? If you had asked me, prior to me sitting down to write the first book of the Ryo Myths, Appointment at the Edge of Forever, if I would ever write science fiction or fantasy, I would have given you an emphatic no. I’d never considered writing sci-fi or fantasy. I’d read plenty of fantasy and a little sci-fi, but I’d never felt drawn to write it. Once I had the idea for the Ryo Myths though, it was like blowing up a dam. Now I can’t imagine writing anything else. Sci-fi is such a wonderful vehicle for stories about people. You get to go to amazing places, and you get to talk about real issues in a new way.

3. The plot thickens, or does it? Which one are you, a pantser or a plotter? I’m not sure what a panster is, but I do prefer shorts.
BookCover_Appointment at the Edge of Forever
4. Fear 101: As writers it is our duty to make our characters face their fears. Have you ever included one of your own fears in a storyline? I have. When I was in high school I competed internationally in whitewater kayaking. Every now and then, I’d get into a situation on a river where I’d get the very real feeling that I was going to die. Almost all of the characters in the Ryo Myths have to, at some point, reason with their mortality. They are all put in situations that are dangerous, both in terms of the physical world, but also in terms of their mental outlook. What I learned from kayaking was that there was a lot that was out of my control, but the only thing I truely had in my control was my focus, which directly translated into my ability to move my boat. Throughout the Ryo Myths, my characters are forced to evaluate the way they perceive danger. I make them break down their self doubt and overcome it. I hope that I can be as rational when I myself land in a precarious position.

5. Fear 102: Yes, deadlines are terrifying. Have you conquered the juggling act between writing and the rest of your life? What do you do when it feels like the balls are dropping all around you? I would say that time management is an endless game. For the past several years I’ve worked mostly in the summer and been able to focus on writing in the winter. I just got a new job though, and I am re-learning how to manage my time. What I know though is that my writing always finds a way. I end up doing it no matter how much I try not to, so I’ve stopped stressing about making time for it. Now I just try to make the time I do write count.

6. Switch positions with one of your main characters in a scene. What is the outcome, disaster or divine intervention? In the second book of the Ryo Myths, Tomorrow is Too Late, Drakier Lu is introduced. He and Captain Eri used to date, and they don’t any more, for very good reasons. Drakier did some pretty terrible things to Captain Eri, and were I in his position, I couldn’t have gone through with it. I would have done anything to avoid doing what he did, but that’s the beauty of writing. Not all your characters are you. (Some of them are though, it’s unavoidable.)

7. Where is your favorite place to write? Add that one comfort food that you can’t do without. I like to write in dark coffee shops. Is coffee a food? What about green tea?

8. Writing inspirations? Ernest Hemingway. I know all his stories have similar themes about being a man and what it really means to be that man, but his simplicity and attention to detail is impressive. I agree with Hemingway’s assessment of adjectives and adverbs. I personally love weather, and I’m all for simple yet real meals.

9. You are introduced to your favorite author. Who is it, and what is that one burning question you must ask them? I’ve got a lot of authors I admire, but currently I find myself reading a lot of Tana French. She writes these amazing novels that are a blend between mystery and literary fiction. French’s novels take place in Ireland, she has this way with writing curses in dialect and only the curses in dialect. What results from that is the reader thinks in an Irish accent without having to wade through long sections written entirely in dialect. If I were to ask her one question, it would be, where did she learn to do that?

10. I’ve gone mad – why don’t you come with me? Some people just don’t understand us writers. Name a quirky, writer-thing you do that friends wish you didn’t. I call people out when they misuse words, constantly. I don’t think they like it, but seriously, endearing and enduring are different words. I’m just trying to help.

The Ryo Myths

by Perrin Pring

Blurb:

Filion felt safe in his role as a Dream Searcher. He was paid to venture into other’s dreams and exert influence over individuals whom he would never meet in the flesh.

But that was until he received The Summoning. Filion has been called to track down and protect Ryo, the last of the Chozen. She is the only hope of preventing a tide of evil driven by the Afortiori and the prospect of universal slavery if they aren’t stopped.

Time is ticking and Filion has no idea of how to find Ryo let alone how to protect her, yet destinies of planets rest in her hands. Enlisting the help of a rag-tag band of mercenaries, Filion will set out to search the wastes for Ryo. Together they will confront an evil whose power they just might have fatally underestimated.

Excerpt:

She barreled blindly through the forest, not knowing where she was going, only that she had to go. She had to get away, away from whom she didn’t know, but she had to move. They were watching her.

Memories flooded through her. She was on a ship, she was in a car, she was healing the sick, she was giving orders, she was lost. These memories weren’t hers, yet they felt so natural. They felt so real. It was her, Ryo, in those memories, but she couldn’t recall any of them any more than one could truly recall a dream.

She stopped running. Her side ached from the exertion, and her right leg still bled painfully. She peeled back the dark, sticky dress. The cut was deep. It wasn’t going to heal on its own. Then the bubbling came back.

Her hands moved over her leg, and she gasped. The bubbling grew, the hotness, the confidence, the power; all of it came back. She closed her eyes and the pain peaked, then it was gone. She waited several breaths, and then finally opened her eyes. Other than the dried blood and torn dress, one would never have known her leg had been injured. The skin was flawless without even a hint of a scar. She looked at her hands. She had known exactly where to put them. It was as if she had done this every day of her life…

She stood up and quickly sat back down. Her legs shook, and her breathing was ragged. What was happening to her?

Who was she?

Forbidden Things:  Book One – Dissident

by Nikki McCormack

Blurb:

Ascard power can strengthen, heal and create. It also has great potential to destroy, enough to topple entire governments. Indigo’s country places strict limitations on the use of ascard so she must channel her talents into the healing arts or risk severe punishment. An orphan from a disgraced family, trapped by her father’s treason, Indigo struggles to reclaim her place in a society that has driven her into an abusive engagement.

Then a mysterious stranger from a neighboring country contacts her using ascard. He needs help escaping his prison so he can bring an end to his emperor’s oppressive rule or die trying. His unshakable devotion to his cause and the passion hidden behind his cool arrogance move her to help him at the risk of being branded a traitor herself.

When the politics of society bring them together a second time, Indigo decides to use her growing powers to help him fight his war. If only she dared fight for her own future with such passion. Perhaps she can find the courage to do so by helping the man she has fallen for win his revolution. She might have exactly the power he needs to succeed.

Excerpt:

Indigo stared at the place Eldrian had been seconds ago. With him there, even the beasts couldn’t drive her away. With him gone, icy fingers of dread crept up her spine. She wanted to be anywhere else. In scant seconds, everything changed and all she had left of him were memories and a pair of boots.

Looking at the oversized boots, she grinned. Though she barely knew him, something about him fit her. His arms felt like home more than any place she had ever been. Jayce would be a poor substitute for this exotic man who made her feel so wanted and alive. Such was the price she would pay for her father’s treason.

She stepped closer to the pillars, pulse racing, but the shimmer was gone. He was gone and she couldn’t follow. In that instant, she would abandon everything to go after him. Placing a hand on either side of one pillar, she closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against rough gray stone. If only…

The sound of movement behind her shattered her musings like so much fragile glass. Her heart bounded into her throat. She spun. A hound ambled into the canyon. She looked into its sightless eyes and recognized death in them.

Nikki lives in the magnificent Pacific Northwest tending to her awesome husband, two sweet horses, three manipulative cats, and a crazy dog. Excerpt

He wondered if her skin was as smooth as it looked in the bright lights of the bathroom. He raised his hand and caressed gentle fingers over her cheek to detach a thin strand of hair from her lips.

“What’s your name?”

He returned his hands to her shoulders and slid both of them down the soft naked flesh of her arms to hold onto her hands and keep her from bolting, amused at the way she blinked rapidly. Her eyes sparkled unnaturally, and he knew. He just knew there was something special about her. He hadn’t figured it out yet, but he was going to. The instant attraction to her was more than just sexual, it was…protective.

She took three small hitching breaths before she managed to gush out a reply. “I…I don’t know.”

He caressed his thumbs on the insides of her palms to soothe her and pondered how long it would take to strip the dress off her. After all, the bathroom was empty. He chuckled as she became even more flustered, and he wondered if she could read his thoughts. She certainly hadn’t made any effort to escape him, and there was no sign of her not enjoying his touch.

“You don’t know your own name?”

“No.” Her breath whispered, and her chest heaved. “I don’t.”

Her hands went limp in his, and she stared deep into his eyes, almost hypnotizing him. Amused at the reciprocal effect he appeared to have on her, he stepped in closer and dipped down to whisper in her ear, the temptation to nibble it almost irresistible. “Well, neither do I, sweetheart. What would you suggest I call you?”

He felt rather than heard her indrawn breath against the background of thundering music. He took advantage and deliberately skimmed his lips against the silken curve of her cheek, taking pleasure in the rise of heat in his chest and the instant arousal that shot through him.

The light scent of her perfume filled his nostrils and tickled his senses. The thrum of his pulse increased to match the rhythm of the music and sent his blood chasing through his veins.

“Ginny Golding. You can call me Ginny.” She puffed and made him smile. The woman was just so goddamned cute and attractive.

“Ginny. Is that your name?” He touched the back of his fingers against her jawline and stroked them upward to her ear, his own dark, tanned skin a wild contrast to the alabaster of hers. Her tantalizing shudder emboldened him to skim his fingers through the fine strands of her hair and cup the back of her neck.

“I think so.”

A deep chuckle rumbled at her confusion, and the desire to kiss her, feel her full lips against his, and taste her response rose in him. He tightened his hold on her, drawing her in.

“Yeah. Me too. You look like a Ginny.” He skimmed his lips over her temple as she held still. A gentle tremble coursed through her body, making him take it slow.

“I feel like a Ginny.”

The beast rumbled in his belly. He controlled it and placed a soft kiss on her forehead, and then pulled back to stare into her entrancing eyes. Desperate desire overrode his patience. “So do I. Let’s get out of here.”

He reached for her hand and tugged her toward the door, but she pulled back, the fog in her eyes lifting. “Oh, I don’t know whether I should. I need to tell Roni.”

Character Interview – Jenny Cohen

What is your motto ? At the risk of sounding cliché, I’d have to say ‘Live, Laugh, Love’. With my father dying so young, and my mother being disabled, I learned early in life that you have to take every single day as a gift and live life to its fullest.

Is it hard to share your feelings? In my job, I’m an extrovert. But in my personal life I’m closer to an introvert. Outside of my two best friends, Beth and Sara, I’ve always had a hard time getting close enough to people to share my inner feelings. Then I met Craig. There was just something about him that made me open up and feel comfortable sharing anything. I never felt as if he would judge me.

What is your best memory? My dad died when I was young and my mother had a hard time making ends meet. We rarely splurged on anything. But the first Saturday morning of each month, my mother would take me to buy donuts for breakfast and we would each get two magazines. We would read the horoscope pages first, then we’d go through the fashion articles.

Do you still read your horoscope? Definitely. Even now that she’s in a nursing home, every time I visit I bring her favorites. We sit on the floor around her coffee table and look at the pretty dresses in Vogue and Glamour and talk about Oprah’s favorite things for the month. When we’re laughing at the predictions and reading the gossip column, I feel like that little girl again – before everything changed. Maybe I’m just fooling myself, but I think there’s a real connection and our ritual makes her happy for the time it lasts. We have fun and that’s all that matters. People really should laugh more.

What is your greatest extravagance? I have two:  I love art. My house is full of art pieces I’ve collected over the years. Many of them aren’t even recognized names, but I picked each one for a special reason.

The second is my shoe collection. I have over three-hundred pairs of shoes. Heels, flats, flip-flops, tennis shoes. You name it.

Which talent would you most like to have? This is probably one of my greatest secrets. I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone how much I want to play the piano. I would love to make space in my living room for a baby-grand. One day, I’ll have time to take lessons and I’ll drive Craig and Ben crazy practicing scales.

You’re getting ready for a night out. Where are you going? What do you wear? Who will you be with? I love to dress up and go out with Craig and my two best friends, Sara and Beth, and their husbands. Our favorite place is Carlino’s. The food is magnificent. And they have a piano bar and a dance floor. What I wear usually depends on how I feel that evening – but you can bet that I’ll be wearing a pair of my favorite stilettos.

Summer’s Family Affair

by Cynthia Gail

Blurb:

Jenny Cohen defines successful independence: she put herself through college, couldn’t ask for better friends, owns a consulting firm, wears designer clothes, and just moved into her dream home . . . But she’s alone, except for her ailing mother whom she supports in a nursing home. As the marketing consultant for Chester, Dorsey & Tanner, she’s surrounded by male attention. Too bad it’s the overly-protective big-brother type.

Architect, Craig Stone, hasn’t looked at another woman since his wife passed away four years ago. His time is taken—building a career while trying to be both mother and father to his eight-year-old son. But when his appointment with the largest development firm in Nashville is double-booked with a black-haired beauty, he finds himself reaching for new possibilities.

The attraction sets off more fireworks than the Fourth of July. Yet, their relationship is riddled with issues neither one of them expected. Somewhere in the middle they must find a way to compromise or let go of a chance for love they may never find again.

Excerpt:

All thought froze, as a beautiful voice cut through the near-silence of the room. Craig stared at the portfolio for just a second more before turning his attention to the front desk. He couldn’t see far enough around the corner to get a good view. What he did see . . . a pair of black strappy stilettos.

“Better you than me. He’s in an awful mood. Jeffry was out for just three days and his temp messed up the entire week’s schedule.”

Craig quietly moved down the row of chairs. Though his line of sight was much improved, he still couldn’t see the face behind the voice.

“You know it’s only going to get worse. It’s just Monday. How bad is it, really?”

She must be leaning over the desk, because her voice was now a faint whisper and the scene that greeted him was a firm derriere and a pair of runner’s legs that made his heart skip a beat.

“I’m not sure. I do know that you’re double-booked with the gentleman sitting across the room. Don’t look now.” Someone cleared their throat. “He’s a new architect Nick’s consulting with on the expansion designs. Too expensive to reschedule. Sorry.”

“Oh.”

“Brandon’s supposed to be part of their meeting and the temp had it on his calendar for noon tomorrow, instead of nine today.”

“I guess I can take second place. Only because it puts Brandon at my mercy. Tell Jeffry to come to the lobby and we’ll work it out. I’m always flexible, especially when it gives me an edge.”

The women laughed, a beautiful melody that rang through his entire being. Craig watched as she straightened and he could now see long, wavy black hair, falling against a ruby-red silk blouse. She reminded him of a Victoria Secrets model—long and lean, with a hint of curve.

“That’s why I like you so much. It’ll be a few minutes, if you’d like to have a seat.”

Craig shifted his attention back to the contract in his hand and purposefully read the title five more times. Slowly. He listened as her shoes clicked across the hardwood floor, waiting until the sound stopped before turning in her direction. She’d taken the chair he’d previously occupied and was sliding her phone into a black designer clutch.

Then she greeted him with a smile that still held a spark of amusement. He took a deep breath and swallowed. She had a hint of summer tan that made her skin glow, a touch of sheer gloss on her lips, and chocolate-brown eyes that instantly warmed him to the core.

His throat went suddenly dry and his mind raced for something to say. He stared silently, feeling like a teenage boy who’d never spoken to a girl before. Somehow, he found his footing and stood, then walked over to the chair next to hers. “Craig Stone.”

Dai’s Dark Valentine

“Dai’s Dark Valentine” by Dariel Raye

Blurb

What happens when a sheltered cat-shifter and a dark fey come together?

Three-hundred years is a long time, but left to its own devices, what began as the vendetta of one man can grow to encompass even more formidable hatred.

Daitre Salons is a beautiful but naïve heiress whose true heritage has been kept secret even from her. Now, her abilities are emerging and her father’s enemies want her dead, but what bothers her most is that her new husband “in name only” insists on treating her like a child.

Joban Beaucoup, professional guard to the Salons family, and dark fey (alternate spelling from Vodouin origin), has chosen to leave the quaint yet suffocating French town of his orphan-childhood and venture to the Americas, but he needs one thing he cannot concoct, despite his magical abilities – a wife.

When Joban agrees to marry Daitre and take her to the Americas with him, he carries her three-thousand miles away, then whisks her three-hundred years into the future to assure her safety, but while Daitre struggles to adjust to this strange new world, manage her newfound powers, and make peace with her feelings for Joban, Joban learns that even here, their enemies have followed them, now more deadly than ever.

New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A. – Present

Daitre instinctively wrapped her arms around Joban’s neck, wonder overshadowing every other thought and emotion.

Before she could blink, he slid her arms from him and took a step back. She blinked again and glanced around, the environment too strange for comprehension. What seemed like millions of images flashed around her synapses at once.

She closed her eyes again and did her best to ignore the rocks in her stomach, but the feeling of rejection would not go away. She’d over-stepped. He made it clear he did not want to be touched. Apparently he’d meant what he said about their marriage being a union in name only, and God alone knew where he’d brought her.

The magical orb resurfaced in her mind and she watched Joban in awe. She’d always known he was a time bender, and he’d even flashed her from one place to another before, but his particular species of fey were so rare, she’d never met another, and no matter what she thought she knew, experiencing the phenomenon was no less overwhelming and amazing.

Everything seemed to happen in a flash, glimpses of familiar and unfamiliar things slowly registering as the light faded. Joban told her they were in The Americas, the United States of America to be exact, three-hundred years in the future, the twenty-first century, and he began showing her odd clothing.

“Things are very different here and now, Daitre. You will need to adjust as fast as possible. I got these for you after your father told me your size. They will take some getting used to, but dressing is much easier in this century, I imagine.”

“What part of America are we in?”

“We are in a place called New Orleans, Louisiana. I should have family here, and so should you.” He waved across his left hand and a picture appeared.

“This is a map of the United States. We are here,” he said, pointing to the bottom tip of Louisiana.

Daitre frowned.

“What is it, Princess?”

She placed her hands on her hips and folded her arms. “The picture in your hand. That’s something else I did not know you could do.”

“And why does this trouble you?”

She waved him away, the frown morphing into a scowl as she raised her voice. “I do not know. You are all I have, yet I know nothing about you for certain. I find it very troubling.”

He sighed, but otherwise said nothing.

Daitre fingered her gown and glanced warily at the pants, dresses, and other garments he’d purchased. All of her beautiful things were left behind – gowns, jewels, everything left in Monsieur Beaucoup’s carriage.

She wrapped her arms around her midsection. “No.”

“’No,’ what?” His ominous tone did nothing to help the situation.

“No, I will not wear those. They are the garments of a harlot, and all of my things have been left in another place and time.”
