Author Interview: Eliza Hampstead

1. How did you choose your genre? What made you write this book?

It’s the genre I love to read the most. A few years ago, I immersed myself in spicy fantasy romances and found that I was craving a specific type of story—something with Nephilim, spice, more mature characters, and a blend of romance and supernatural elements. When I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted, I decided to write it myself. The Nephilim’s Fate was born from my desire to create a world inspired by Shadowhunters—one that I absolutely adore—but with a spicier twist and more mature characters.

2. Writers write what they know, and must observe the world. Are you a firstborn, middle, or last child, and how does this shape your view of the world?

I’m an only child, and while I’m not sure how it specifically shapes my worldview, I’d say it’s given me a lot of independence and self-reliance. Growing up, I spent a lot of time diving into books and creating worlds in my imagination, which I think plays into how I build the characters and universes in my stories. It’s perhaps why I enjoy crafting characters like Alissia, who are strong yet solitary in many ways.

3. Where is your favorite place to write?

Somewhere quiet is ideal for me. I usually write at my desk, where I can focus on the story without distractions. The peacefulness helps me dive deeper into the world I’m creating, whether it’s unraveling a tense scene between Alissia and Nate or piecing together complex lore.

4. How do you feel about killing your darlings, and what do you do with the remains?

Oh, I absolutely love it! There’s something so powerful in those moments of drama and emotion. Killing off beloved characters or breaking their hearts creates a raw intensity that forces the surviving characters to grow and challenge their beliefs. It’s also a great way to surprise the reader and keep them invested in the story. The remains? They linger in the memories of the other characters and leave a lasting impact on the overall plot.

5. You are introduced to your favorite author. Who is it, and what is that one burning question you must ask them?

V.E. Schwab. I admire her work so much! She’s spoken before about the struggles of being a writer, and I’d love to sit down with her and ask how she handles the pressure and overcomes challenges. I’d also be curious to know how she creates such brilliant, multi-layered stories that stay with readers long after the final page.

6. Inquiring minds want to know…tell readers something about you that no one knows.

Honestly, I’m an open book! I don’t think there’s much about me that I keep secret. The things I do keep private are not really safe to share publicly! 😉

7. You are stranded on a deserted island with only a backpack for company. What three items are in your survival pack?

First, my Kindle loaded with all the books I can read (with an unlimited battery, of course). Second, I’d definitely need a working phone so I can call for help when I’m ready to leave. Lastly, I’d have to bring sunscreen—I tend to burn easily, and I’d need protection from the sun while I enjoy my reading on the beach!

8. If you could have one superpower in your existence, what would it be?

I’d love the ability to stop time or teleport. Being able to pause time would allow me to get more writing done, and teleportation would make traveling so much easier!

9. Favorite snack?

I don’t snack much, especially not on sugary things because the pounds seem to find me quickly! Usually, I snack on veggies like carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes. They’re my go-to side during dinner and make for a healthy snack in the living room afterward.

10. Indy 500 – Do you know how to get where you’re going or do you drive the speed limit?

I’d probably be more of a spectator at the Indy 500! I have a terrible sense of direction, and I’m not fond of driving fast. So, I’d enjoy watching from the sidelines rather than being in the race myself.

Excerpt:

Letting the magic come to me in the same way it had begun in the park, I smelled pine needles and mushrooms. At that moment, I wanted to push to get it deeper, but I forced myself to stay relaxed and let it flow through me while I told the plant how terrific it would be outside. Sun, water, and CO2 for photosynthesis, all were waiting for her if she would come out of the soil, and that my magic would help her grow faster, that she doesn’t have to wait any longer. The feeling of earth magic got stronger, and the inner picture before me was bathed in green. I said the words of the spell. After that, I focused again on the plant, imagining how the seed germinated, how the sprouting fought its way to the surface, how the seed leaves opened, sheeting the seed coat, and how the first leaves developed and opened.

Suddenly, I heard clapping. Losing my concentration, I opened my eyes. Umbra stood before me, a broad smile on her face.

“You did it!”

I frowned for a second before I looked down. The seedling stood before me, the seed coat next to it on the soil. Exactly how I had imagined it. I put my hand in front of my mouth, tears welling in my eyes.

“I did it. I did it!” I jumped up and down, clapping my hands. I was a real witch! I could do magic, after all! Full of joy, I embraced Umbra and circled her around while we both laughed.
