Author Interview: C.M. Forest

1. How did you choose your genre? What made you write this book?

I’ve always been a rabid fan of horror. Ever since I was a kid, I devoured all things spooky. When I first started writing, there was little doubt in my mind which genre I would gravitate toward.

The Roots Run Deep is a short story collection. When I first tried my hand a prose, over a decade ago, it was writing short stories. The last few years have been dedicated to working on novels. It wore me out! I thought a return to short stories was the breath of fresh air I needed.

2. Writers write what they know, and must observe the world. Are you a first born, middle or last child and how does this shape your view of the world?

I have an older brother, a younger half-sister, and half-brother. But growing up, it was just me and my older brother in our home. He was hugely impactful to my development as a writer. He was was/is a big horror reader. So, for as long as I can remember, there were horror novels decorating the shelves of our house.

3. Where is your favorite place to write?

I hate to be a stereotype, but it’s got to be coffee shops. Luckily, I live in Canada, and so there is a Tim Horton’s on every corner. I usually like to get there earlier, grab a coffee (and a donut!), set up in a corner, and write for few hours.

4. How do you feel about killing your darlings, and what do you do with the remains?

To be honest, I have no problem with it. I plot my stories pretty heavily, so most of my characters’ fates are sealed long before I type a single word.

5. You are introduced to your favorite author. Who is it, and what is that one burning question you must ask them?

Okay, so I’m going to go with the obvious choice here. Stephen King. He’s not necessarily my favorite author, but he’s up there. And his impact on horror literature is immeasurable. Honestly? If I did meet him, I would likely just ask him to sign my copy of It. Otherwise, it would just be the conversation I was after.

6. Inquiring minds want to know…tell readers something about you that no one knows.

I’m a big Star Wars geek. Movies, novels, comics, video games, I love it all! I’ve been hooked on that galaxy far, far away since the late nineties.

7. You are stranded on a deserted island with only a back pack for company. What three items are in your survival pack?

One of those water purifier things, an e-reader loaded with books, and a solar powered charger.

8. If you could have one super power in your existence, what would it be?

Mind control! I’d like to think I would only use it for good, but I would totally get up to some mischief.

9. Favorite snack?

I usually gravitate toward ice cream. I love me some Haagen Dazs.

10. Indy 500 – Do you know how to get where you’re going or do you drive the speed limit?

I used to be really good with directions, but thanks to cell phones, that skill has dulled quite a bit. I wouldn’t say I have a lead foot, but I can say that I rarely drive the speed limit. I tend to go about 10 over the limit.

Excerpt:

Alison got out of her car, the engine still on, and staggered down the road. Blood soaked through the front of her dress. It looked black—like a growing oil spill—under the sickly haze of the street lights. A smattering trail of circles on the pavement marked her route as she stumbled away. Her underwear, torn and soiled, hung limply around one ankle.

She did not want to look back at the car, but a deep, primal urge overrode all her wants and desires. Even as her body trembled, she found herself peeking over her shoulder. Tendrils of mist, which were seeping in off the nearby dark fields, gave her vehicle a ghostly appearance. A 3000-pound wraith waiting to lunge. The headlights, blazing though the fog, seemed to stare back at her. The fender, a taunting grin. Specks of blood dotted the windshield from the inside; gory handprints stained the seats.

Something moved within the car. An arm, a face, briefly—horribly—illuminated by the interior lights. A shifting figure, covered in a blanket of shining viscera. It was already bigger than it should be. It was growing fast.
