Author Interview: Eden Monroe

1. How did you choose your genre? What made you write this book?

I didn’t choose the genre, romantic suspense. I had written my first novel, Dare to Inherit, without any specific genre in mind. I just told the story, and it ended up being a romantic suspense and so I have continued on in that same genre because it has the best fit. As for Sunrise Interrupted, I wanted to write a trilogy about three sisters. The first was Ginger, a writer (Sudden Turn), next was Naomi, a computer programmer (Barlowe Pride) and of course the third sister is Alexandra and she’s an actress, so Sunrise Interrupted was born.

 2. Writers write what they know, and must observe the world. Are you a first born, middle or last child and how does this shape your view of the world?

I am the second of four and have always been fiercely independent. I know I was a difficult child to raise because I didn’t take well to instruction. I wanted to figure everything out for myself (my poor mother!), and go where I wanted to go. I am a (calculated) risk taker. I’ve been to quite a few continents and want to see more. I remember as a little kid looking at the horizon, and wondering what was on the other side. I am a peacemaker.

3. Where is your favourite place to write?

It used to be an armchair and I wrote everything in longhand. It often made for a sore hand trying to write as quickly as what I could imagine, so now I write at my desk on my computer. It doesn’t inhibit my creativity as I was afraid it might. I am able now to produce 8,000 words per day with no interruption in the flow. I’m very fortunate.

4. How do you feel about killing your darlings, and what do you do with the remains?

That can be brutal sometimes, but there’s no point in keeping something that’s not useful. If something is better pared down, then the overall good has been realized. I don’t do anything with the remains. Once the incising is done I just let them go and never look back. I’ve never been sorry I did what I did, not in the long run.

5. You are introduced to your favourite author. Who is it, and what is that one burning question you must ask them?

My favourite book of all time was Anne of Green Gables which of course was written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, but if she were still living I would have no wish to meet her. I’ve read all four large volumes of her journals so feel I know her pretty well. So the author I would most enjoy sitting down to have a cup of coffee with would be James Patterson or Stephen King, not to talk about writing, but to pick their brain on how best to succeed in such a competitive industry. That to me would be an inspiring conversation.

6. Inquiring minds want to know … tell readers something about you that no one knows.

Oh that’s a tough one. I would guess the one thing about me that no one knows or because it happened so long ago they’ve likely forgotten, is that I was once taken off a cruise yacht in Fiji against my will and used as a decoy to smuggle someone into that part of the country. It had all been arranged, but they got the wrong person, me. It was a case of mistaken identity and I was reunited with my cousin and friends sometime later, but it was still an unsettling experience. It just goes to show how quickly something like that can happen, as within seconds I was spirited away from 86 people who were supposedly looking out for me (at 21 I was the youngest of the group) and taken in a completely different direction.

7.  You are stranded on a desert island with only a backpack for company. What three items are in your survival pack?

Water, a thick coil notebook and a good pen so I could write about the experience. I would last only three days without water, three weeks without food, but I wouldn’t want to be three hours without a way to write something down if I wanted to. I couldn’t stand it.

8. If you could have one super power in your existence, what would it be?

If I were to have one super power it would be that no person or animal would ever suffer needlessly again. No children would starve or be made to withstand pain inflicted upon them by those who are supposed to protect them. Same thing with animals. I think I would be very busy.

9. Favourite snack?

My favourite snack nowadays is popcorn. I make it in a pot on the stove with hot olive oil and I swish it around until it starts to pop. It has to pop fast though in order to be tender. If it pops too slowly it’ll be tough and there’ll be too many unpopped kernels. Then I add sea salt. I love the stuff. I could eat my weight in it.

10.  Indy 500 – Do you know how to get where you’re going or do you drive the speed limit?

I rarely drive the speed limit, with the notable exception of school zones and anything 50 kilometres or below. Don’t want to hurt anyone. On the highway I sometimes drive a little under but usually a little (or a lot) over. When there are no eyes on me (or I figure there aren’t) I’ll just drive the road and be done with it. One time I was driving backcountry roads late at night, zipping along in a hurry to get home which was still quite a distance away. I turned on the radio and the first words I heard were: “Slow down!” I can’t remember the rest of the sentence, but I got the message. It was Willie Nelson and think it might have been the song Slow Down Old World. So I heeded those words and slowed down. True story!

Excerpt:

The old dog, soaked from a tumble into the icy water and limping badly, continued to pick its way along the creek that rushed between steep boulder-strewn banks. Beau Remington, far above on horseback, spotted the bedraggled canine and quickly dismounted, clamouring down the embankment toward it. With one arm wrapped around a sturdy yellow birch to anchor himself, he stretched forward to scoop up the small dog and slipped it inside his jacket. Steadying the terrified animal with one hand he then began the climb back up to the trail where his horse, Chance, waited patiently.

He talked to the dog soothingly, the rich timbre of his voice comforting as the shivering slowly began to subside within the warmth of leather on a cool spring day. Beau urged the gelding into a trot for the final half-mile to his ranch nestled deep in the rolling hills of Belleisle, New Brunswick, Canada’s picture province. He loved the quiet solitude, but soon the area would have some unlikely visitors when they started shooting the movie, Retribution, a few miles up the road. As a veterinarian he’d already agreed to be on set when animals were scheduled to appear in the movie, so it should be an interesting experience.

The dog whimpered plaintively against him, reigniting Beau’s anger at the insensibility of some selfish, cold-hearted pet owners. This had definitely been a dump, an old dog, half-blind and likely no longer wanted. The poor thing had either been lame before being abandoned, or injured in the fall, and it was because of situations like this that he’d dedicated his life to animals.
