Excerpt:  

I was just about to add a peevish, “I knew this wouldn’t work,” when I glanced past Alex at the short wall that surrounded the patio.  The three Gila monsters sat calmly on the top of the stucco partition.  Well, I assumed it was the same three, but frankly, they all look alike to me so it could have been another trio.  Slowly, I stood up, and beyond the wall, there was an assortment of animals: jackrabbits, ground squirrels, tarantulas, two coyotes, a mule deer and even a momma bobcat with two kittens.  They all just sat there, but I could swear they were staring directly at me.  Although I admit that even with eight eyes apiece, it was difficult to gauge exactly at what, if anything, the big, hairy spiders were looking. Since I met Alex, I’d witnessed some bizarre stuff.  This assemblage of creatures that normally fear and sometimes eat one another just sittin’ around chillin’ together was truly amazing. And sort of creepy.

All I could say was, “Whoa.”

Alex turned and followed my wide-eyed gape beyond the wall.

“Fascinating,” he whispered. “Unbelievably fascinating.”

Neither of us dared move; we both just stared, awestruck, at the odd congregation before us.  I noticed a Harris’s hawk perched on a high branch in a mesquite tree, and wondered if it was the one from the night before.  Soon, another hawk flew in and landed on another part of the same tree.

It was like a scene from a low-budget horror movie.  Animals, pissed about some ecological faux pas perpetrated by humans, mustered around an isolated cabin rented for the weekend by a group of scantily clad, slightly inebriated sorority girls and their horny, completely wasted jock boyfriends.  One stupid loser, deciding to take a leak outside rather than use the perfectly good bathroom facilities provided in the cabin by the evil real estate company whose actions inspired the animal’s grudge, is eaten alive by the angry hoard.  In the morning, his friends find only his skeletal remains, still being nibbled upon by a few indolent chipmunks.

M.L. Ryan is a profes­sional woman – not that she gave up her amateur status, but rather that she is over-educated with a job in which she spends a lot of time writing dry, science non-Fiction.
